Quote of the Day: President Barack Obama on Climate Change : TreeHugger
We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity. We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms. The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries – we must claim its promise. That is how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure – our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That’s... Continue Reading

It feels great, and it will make someone else feel great, too.... Continue Reading

Good Samaritan Pays Fares
The holidays are upon us and the spirit of giving is already in full swing in the Northland. An anonymous good Samaritan is paying it forward today. It’s the time of year when we do what we can to help others, especially those who’ve fallen on misfortune. A man from Duluth recently came upon some good fortune. After losing his wallet for a spell, it made it’s way back to him with everything accounted for. “It came to him in the mail and everything was there and so he said he was just overjoyed obviously that his wallet came back... New Collective Artist Titus Burger
Orphan Sunday Project by Titus Burger from Amber Burger on Vimeo. Titus is one of the coolest kids I have had the privilege of meeting.  To see someone this young having the passion to help others is both humbling and inspiring.  I would pay the 4 dollars for his artwork (and already have) just to make this kid’s project successful. Seeing that the money is going to help clothe orphans makes this opportunity even more beautiful. So often we are hindered by our thoughts, and we allow ourselves to believe that our “small” contributions won’t make a difference.  A penny here…a... Continue Reading

Back to the Start: Willie Assists Chipotle’s Quest To End Factory Farms
In this charming music video from Chipotle, Willie sings about going “back to the start” of American farming, before animals were pumped with antibiotics and kept in factories. A farmer, not content with his small family farm, starts to modernize. He turns his farm into a factory, pumping drugs into his pigs and pollutants into the water. But one night, he has a revelation: This is not what his life needs to be. He lets his animals roam free and raises them naturally (though still eats them). That’s the premise of the new music video commissioned by Chipotle, featuring Willie... Continue Reading

Anatomy of a smart city
The dramatic shift of the world’s population into urban areas is encouraging citizens, city planners, businesses and governments to start looking at visions of ‘smart’ cities. Below we look into what is driving the need to establish these networked environments, how smart city concepts and projects are different in the developing world, and what technologies and systems are needed to make them a reality. Quick Facts and Stats: Up until 1975 there were just 3 Megacities (New York, Tokyo and Mexico City). Today there are 21. The top 600 urban centers generate 60% of global GDP By 2025, the number... Is it Just Me, Or is it Getting Kinda Crowded in Here?
Though it’s impossible to say exactly when it will happen, demographers have chosen the date to mark the milestone. Humanity remains on a steep growth curve. It took only a dozen years for humanity to add another billion people to the planet, reaching the milestone of 7 billion Monday — give or take a few months. Demographers at the United Nations Population Division set Oct. 31, 2011, as the “symbolic” date for hitting 7 billion, while acknowledging that it’s impossible to know for sure the specific time or day. Using slightly different calculations, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the 7-billion... Continue Reading
